Funny Japan Commercial

Filmed from the checkerboard used for the approach into Kai Tak. Overshoots and then lines it up just to get caught in the wind...again. Unedited. You can hear another enthusiast in the background with a scanner. Airboyd.

July 2004 Japan's attitude towards women is under the spotlight following revelations that students at an elite university ran a 'rape club' dedicated to planning gang rapes.

A Japanese vehicle manufacturer unveiled the prototype of a new electric motorbike carrying a hybrid magnetic motor, which can run almost noiselessly up to 180 kilometres (112 miles) on one charge. Tokyo-based Axle Corporation says that the battery of the next-generation electric vehicle motorbike can be charged at home, in the same way as a cellular phone. It takes a little over 6 hours to fully charge the battery, and the vehicle's maximum speed is capable of reaching 150 kilometres per hour (93 miles per hour). The company says the futuristic motorbike enjoys high energy efficiency thanks to a state-of-the-art magnetic motor which is a hybrid between a electromagnet and a permanent magnet. The new motor, called SUMO, short for "super motor," is housed inside the bike's rear wheel. The manufacture says the new motor is seven-times more cost efficient than gas-powered scooters. Daisuke Ito, a professional racer who test rode the EV-X7 prototype, said it could potentially replace machines we now see in motor races. "I just feel that in the near future, we'll be seeing these kinds of electric motorbikes running all around town. And when that happens, conventional vehicles could disappear from motor racing, too, and well be competing only in electric vehicles." www.itnsource.com Reuters RTV521706

Aired: 2000 Japan TV Fashion in Japan

This was a video I shot and put together to show to the fam and friends a few years back illustrating an average day teaching English in Japan. It all takes place in the city of Oita, about a 90 minute flight south west of Tokyo, on Kyushu island. This is LONG, about 37 minutes, but will show what teaching English overseas, particularly in Japan, is like. Lots of folks have asked how one can get over to Japan to teach English. One fantastic way(with a B.A. of any variety) is JET: http://www.jetprogramme.org/ If you have any questions, don't hesitate to message me.

ANCHOR: And now onto an unusual tip to fight off a business crisis. A Japanese tavern owner is bringing up a new generation of customer pleasing waiters: macaque monkeys. Are you ready for some monkey business? STORY: This "sake house" in northern Tokyo employs two popular and unusual waiters. They are named Yat-chan and Fuku-chan (pronounced Yat-tchan and Fookoo-chan), and are a pair of Japanese macaque monkeys. Four-year-old Fuku-chan has already two years of experience under his furry belt. His main duty is delivering hot towels to customers before they order their drinks. This is how 12 year-old Yat-chan learned the tricks of the trade. [Kaoru Otsuka, Tavern Owner]: "Yat-chan first learned by just watching me working in the restaurant. It all started when one day I gave him a hot towel out of curiosity and he brought the towel to the customer." Both monkeys are well appreciated by customers who tip them with boiled soy beans. [Takayoshi Soeno, Tavern Customer]: "The monkeys are actually better waiters than some really bad human ones!" Yat-chan is a natural and is always eager to please his customers. [Shoichi Yano, Tavern Customer]: "These guys are really adorable. They're like my kids. Well actually better -- my son doesn't listen to me but Yat-chan will." And customers are impressed that Yat-chan understands their order. [Miho Takikawa, Tavern Customer]: "We called out for more beer just then and it brought us some beer, right? It's amazing how it seems to understand human words." Both monkeys were once household pets. But now they are certified restaurant employees. The monkey pair work in shifts of up to a maximum of two hours a day, due to animal rights regulations. And so their employer is now ready to train three new baby monkeys this year. He hopes to bring up a new generation of Japanese waiters and waitresses.

A series of Fanta commercials from Japan. Now with English "fansub" subtitles! By the way, "dorobo neko", which I translated literally as "thieving cat", is a slang term that refers to a woman who chases after a man married to someone else.

Feb 1996 "A lot of children crack up under the pressure and there are a lot of negative things that happen like bullying." The Hiranos' son committed suicide after he was bullied at a new school. The school authorities made no comment. Satoru Ikeda, teacher, thinks that many students have lost their identity because of a harsh education system in Japan which does not tolerate individuality. Rosalind Brown, English teacher, was shocked by the sight of young children wearing only a pair of shorts. Even in cold weather the children stand in the playground in rows and rub each other's back to keep warm. If children walk around from February to November with a bare belly they win a certificate. Inside the class room they stand and recite English phrases in unison. To get into a better high school and a good university, children also attend evening classes. They enjoy themselves afterwards by going to McDonalds for a coke and doing their homework together. Noriko Nagasaki opposes the education system and says that most parents are afraid to protest in case it affects their children's' exam results.
